Our Story

How it all started...

In April 1975, a group of 36 Christians, united by a shared vision, gathered to discuss the formation of a new congregation. From that meeting, a decision was made to hold weekly prayer and Bible study sessions on Wednesday evenings in the homes of area residents. In one of those meetings, Don Miller was asked to serve as the founding minister for the newly born Worthington Christian Church.

WCC rented space at the Worthington Christian Primary School building, and on September 7, 1975, they opened their doors for the first time. Six months later, a committee was formed to search for property. Eighteen different tracts of land were discussed and researched.

On August 15, 1976, just eleven months after the beginning of the church, the congregation voted to accept the recommendation of the church board to purchase 24 acres in Sharon Township at 8145 North High Street. It was always a goal of the leaders of the Worthington Christian Church to have a retirement home located adjacent to or on the church’s property. So, in 1979, the church sold the back half of the 24 acres to the Worthington Christian Village, Inc.

building together...

August 1979 marked a significant milestone for Worthington Christian Church as we broke ground for our permanent home. As the building took shape, anticipation grew, and we were overjoyed when it was completed just in time for the Easter services on April 6, 1980.

Our journey has been marked by both joy and sorrow. We remember our first Senior Minister, Don Miller, who left us too soon in a car accident in 1977. Paul Patton stepped in for three years until he was called back to his home state of Kentucky. In 1981, we welcomed Marshall Hayden, a great source of encouragement who seamlessly became our new Senior Minister and led us until his retirement in 2009. On January 1, 2010, David Roberson began his ministry with us as Senior Minister.

When David retired in 2017, the Elders recommended that Dr. Jay Scott become our fifth Lead Minister. On March 17, 2019, he accepted that role and led the church through the challenging times of the COVID shutdown. Under his guidance, we embarked on a significant renovation project, the REACH Initiative, which was completed in August 2024. (More detailed information about REACH can be found on our REACH Initiative webpage.)

looking ahead...

Jay has always felt a strong call to reach those who have yet to know Jesus and has a heartfelt desire to focus his time and energy toward that end. On September 1, 2024, after months of prayer, discussion, and earnest contemplation, Jay returned to his previous role as Outreach Minister. We wholeheartedly support Jay's decision and celebrate his continued commitment to outreach!

On October 27, 2024, the Elders recommended Dr. Austin Seevers to be our next Lead Minister. Austin had served Worthington Christian Church for over a decade prior to becoming our sixth Lead Minister. He first came to WCC as an intern, then served as Youth Minister, Community Life Minister, and Teaching Minister. We're excited to have him as our Lead Minister and look forward to many years of growth and ministry ahead!

As always, our goal is to continue moving forward with our unwavering commitment to...
